Faust Vrančić
(1551. – 1617.)

A true Renaissance man, inventor, and polyglot. Born in Šibenik, with the help of his uncle, Bishop Antun Vrančić, a renowned diplomat, he completed the best schools of his time.
He spoke and wrote in seven languages and compiled the first European—and indeed global—multilingual dictionary in five languages in 1595: DICTIONARUM QUINQUE NOBILLISIMARUM EUROPEA LINGUARUM: LATINAE, ITALICAE, GERMANICAE, DALMATICAE ET HUNGARICAE.
In the same year, in Venice, he published his most famous work MACHINAE NOVAE under the patronage of Louis XIII and Cosimo II de’ Medici. In this book, he presents 56 of his inventions across 46 sketches, the most famous of which include the parachute, suspension bridge, cable car, and the use of waterways as a power source. He wrote in a simple and understandable manner, including abundant technical implementation details. The book was quickly translated into other contemporary languages.
An important review of Vrančić’s inventions was written by the English bishop John Wilkins, secretary of the Royal Society in London.
